Day 13: Interview Math – Timing, Pauses & Pacing
Series: How to Crack a Job Interview – Day 13 of 21
🧠 Speaking Well is About Thinking in Beats
Interviews are not rapid-fire debates — they are structured conversations.
And like any good conversation, how fast you speak, when you pause, and how long you take to answer matters deeply.
⏱️ Time Your Answers (Guideline)
Tell me about yourself – ~90 seconds
Why should we hire you? – ~60–90 seconds
Describe a project/conflict/achievement – ~60 seconds
Any questions for us? – Use 2–3 thoughtful ones, each ~30 seconds
📌 Anything longer needs clear structure. Anything shorter may feel undercooked.
🤐 The Power of Pauses
After a question: Pause for 2–3 seconds before answering. It signals thoughtfulness.
While answering: Pause after key points. Let them land.
Avoid: filler phrases like "umm," "like," "you know." Silence is more powerful.
🧭 Pacing Tips:
Don't rush. Fast talk = nerves.
Don't drag. Long-winded = unclear thinking.
Practice with a stopwatch. You'll get the rhythm.
🎯 Quick Practice Drill:
Pick 1 interview question.
Answer it within 60–90 seconds.
Record yourself, then check:
Did you pause before answering?
Did you signal key points with subtle pauses?
Were you clear and within time?
